Hi A-buds,

I have a 69 dart with a split bench seat that needs to be redone. I took the seat down to the skeleton and found out it had 4 broken springs. If you have ever had springs replaced or just know of the average cost of the service can you please let me know.

Thanks.

I've had a lot of success wiring springs back together with some thin wire, and some coat hangers where needed to replace rusted areas. Total cost: $3.99 for steel wire. I'm not trying to win any awards for accuracy.

I have just replaced several of my broken springs from a second seat that I have. Be glad to send you some springs if they are the same. They just slide in the slots.

As you replace springs, replace broken cross wires also. Those tie the springs together so they share the load. Additional cross wires can help too.

^^do you have pictures of the springs you can post?

^are the cross wires the wires that are intertwined in the burlap? If so, I have been hearing that using vinyl will do the same thing and better protection then burlap.

There once was a larger wire wrapped in brown paper to prevent noise. It was attached to each spring with a sheet metal band. Those were eventually deleted.
The burlap with many smaller wires purpose is to prevent the batting or foam from going through the springs. They hog ring that to the springs and it serves the same purpose as the larger wires, for a time anyway.
Upholstery shops sometimes replace that with some other material. I've seen home flooring type carpet used there but it's placed upside down.
If the springs are tied together left to right, you'll have a softer seat that wont hold up as long.

I will try to get some pics up for you tonight. I have two different seat and springs to choose from, so it will help also if you could post a pic of what you have.
The easiest way for me to explain the difference is to compare the rear cross member. On the '72 this piece had a raised center section and used two different springs, 7 of one type and the three in the center were different. On my '75 parts car that rear bar went straight across and all the springs are identical. The springs are different between the seats, so I have three different types to choose from, plus the end springs...
