I watched this one

Seems like a crap ton of work for 400hp when I can stick a 230 cam, rpm intake, and a 750 carb on a 5.9 magnum and make the same power. And not deal with paper thin cylinder walls.4 inch cranks are cheap and so are S/B H-beam rods.
Speedmaster heads are also cheap, so 318ci iron head talk, seems a waste of energy!
90 thou overbore on your old 318 and its a 402ci with 400-hp all day long.
Stop watching 20th Century dinosaurs talk about the 80s'.
Move on now and have some 402 CUBE fun with your 318.![]()
To me the main two reasons to go 318, you got a running one in your car and you want to do a basic rv cam, 4bbl exhaust and tune and second cause you want to run a 3.31” crank you want some rpm’s but not looking to make it 500 + hp.Seems like a crap ton of work for 400hp when I can stick a 230 cam, rpm intake, and a 750 carb on a 5.9 magnum and make the same power. Just because the stroke is shorter doesn’t mean it makes rpm easier. My 489 big block Chevy revs like a chainsaw. To me the main two reasons to go 318, you got a running one in your car and you want to do a basic rv cam, 4bbl exhaust and tune and second cause you want to run a 3.31” crank you want some rpm’s but not looking to make it 500 + hp.
I really don’t get the point of stroking a 318.
I agree, wasn’t what I said and or was implying, if you stroke a 318 it’s gonna gain cid which is gonna take more top end (heads) to feed it.Just because the stroke is shorter doesn’t mean it makes rpm easier. My 489 big block Chevy revs like a chainsaw.
Ok we’re on the same page then. To me it’s the cid to cylinder head flow relationship that makes an engine rpm. And in any case the valvetrain has to be there to support it. But a 318 with any stock cast iron head is running out of breath before 6500 anyway so it’s kinda moot.I agree, wasn’t what I said and or was implying, if you stroke a 318 it’s gonna gain cid which is gonna take more top end (heads) to feed it.
A stock stroke 318 doesn’t need much cylinder head to turn a decent rpm.
the BIGGEST main reason is money. To me the main two reasons to go 318, you got a running one in your car and you want to do a basic rv cam, 4bbl exhaust and tune and second cause you want to run a 3.31” crank you want some rpm’s but not looking to make it 500 + hp.

It has probably been covered here several times but the thought of a 318 short block built with 340 spec parts would be interesting.Great thread (as usual) but guys do run fast with 318's even in the UK.
There was a four door Aussie Valiant that ran 11's with a lowly 318.
Can't find any pictures as it was the 90's and pre smart-phone!
But we was all running 10's in 440 cars (back then) and 318's running 11's was a shocker indeed.
I did a 340 for a guy with a nice 70 Dart and it ran 15.20 all day long.
Getting a 318 down to 11 with iron heads is some feat of engineering...![]()
