List The Mopars You Missed Out On...

71 hemi cuda 4 spd. Bronze with white interior. I just bought my 73, and this one came up for $8,000.00 all restored.I figured I would have that in mine when done (it is real nice 4spd 340, which I still have) But I couldn't get past the bronze with white interior!
I only paid $1450.00 for mine 27 years ago, and still love it. I have about $4000.00 in it total with 6 pack.

Jan. 1971 a 1969 Yellow Mod Top 340 Barracuda for sale at a Chevy dealer. I was 19 years old and needed a co-signer to finance the car but my Dad wouldn't do it since it was for sale at a Chevy lot. He said there had to be something wrong with it or it wouldn't have been traded in on a Chevy!

1. 1969 M-code FB Cuda in red. Needed restoring, but wasn't bad.

During 1998-99 I was traveling a lot between Syracuse, NY and central Indiana. As usual, I was in a hurry to get to Indiana, or back home in Syracuse. I had noticed a car sitting in the weeds, under a tree beside a house in mid-Ohio several times but didn't pay much attention. One day, I looked a little closer as I passed by and thought it resembled a 2nd Gen Barracuda fastback. I said to myself, I will stop on the way back home, which I did (a week later).Sure enough, it was a red, M-code fastback, with weeds growing up all around it. Went to the door and the lady said it was her sons, and gave me his phone #. Called for two weeks, and never could get an answer. Finally a woman answered, and when I started to tell her why I called, she said "are you calling about the Cuda? It's already sold." :-( My heart sank. If I had stopped sooner, maybe, just maybe...

2. 2001, 1970 Roadrunner 440 auto with air-grabber hood in F7 (?) green. Guy had just finished the car and it was sharp, great paint and straight as an arrow. It really was a mint car, but I guess he was ready to move on to another project. Wanted $8k for it and I pussy-footed around until it was gone.

Those are the two most painful ones for me.

Spike,

You just ruined my day...............an M-Code.............

1995 I could have bought a 70 Plumb crazy 340 4 speed Cuda rust free rubber front bumper car from Ca. for $4500. Told my father about it, he bought it and sold it a mo. later for $6500. car is still in Maine and I hear the guy is now refusing $40K for the car. Only if I had known..... LOL!!

Ungrateful Girlfriend,

July 1972

* 1966 Plymouth Barracuda ~ 273 Commando ~ 'Formula S' ~ Automatic ~ Color; 'WW' {White}
* 1 of 6295 Built

My girlfriend had just gotten her license, and she wanted a 'performance car'.

I had let her drive my 1970 Dart Swinger 340 a few times, and she proceeded to get on it one day,
and drive it into a swamp between several trees.

So I figured I get her something with a little less power.

Bingo, one day my father is driving through some back road in Putnam Valley, New York {a very rural town}
and he see's a 'white' 1966 Barracuda with Ansen Mag Wheels sitting in a driveway with no plates on the car.....

Of course, once hearing about this, I made a 'Bee Line' straight to the house.

Yep, it was a 1966 Barracuda, with a 273 Commando 'Formula S', Automatic with a real 8 3/4" Rear-End unit.

The car was an outright 'Cream-Puff' with red interior.

The girl who had possession of the car was selling it for her brother who was back in Jacksonville, Florida -
and he didn't want to come back to New York to get it. So they decided to sell it.

They were asking only $550, and I made an offer of $500, which they accepted. I gave them a deposit of $100,
and left to bring my girlfriend back to see the car the next day.

Me thinking my girlfriend would be excited,,,,,,,,'wrong',,,,,,,,

As we pulled in the driveway she said to me with hate and anger.........
"I'm not driving that F***ing Car."

I knocked on the door of the house with my tail between my legs and asked for the $100 back...........
and had to explain that my girlfriend was a..... '*****'.....and that she didn't want the car.

I was too embarrassed to go back and buy it for myself.......

Oh man! I had a chance to buy a "69 1/2" Road Runner. It had a stage four 440 engine, 12-1 compression and a small .509" hydraulic cam. The car ran 11.2 @ 119 mph.

I just didn't have $10k at the time. Car is long gone now :(

There was also a 69 dart my friend owned. It had a 372 stroked small block, w2 heads, small roller cam, street car that ran 11.4 @ 122. I didn't have the cash then either. $12k he wanted, WTF!

Now that the tables are turned, there is nothing out there I want or I would shell the money out to buy the car. I can't win.

Spike,

You just ruined my day...............an M-Code.............

69 Cuda 440, believe me, I was depressed for weeks, and still get a sinking feeling sometimes when I think about that one. It was the first one I had ever seen and was pretty ignorant of them at the time. As soon as I got home I did the research, but that just added insult to injury. I've always wondered where that car went.

Saw this one at Barrett Jackson quite a few years later, but couldn't track down the owner to inquire.

Spike,

Nothing in life ever beat the 'Thrill' I got when I took out my 69 440 'cuda.

Not only the force explosion on take-off, or the long side-ways burn-outs -
but the question on whether or not the 10" Drum Brakes would stop it in time.....

Like a ride on the 'Wild Mouse' at Palisades Park.

Always have wanted and still want a 68 Charger.

Must have been around 81 or 82, as I walked by it everyday going to junior high 9th grade probably.

Local K Mart has a side lot where people parked cars for sale. one day a black on black 68 Charger showed up, Magnums and traction bars on it.

It sat there for a few days, I finally tried calling the people, 383, Auto car. $800

$800 to a Junior High school kid, may as well have been a million, my parents wouldn't buy it for me. Dang

* 1968 ~ LO23 Hemi Dart ~ Charlie Castaldo's {2nd Dart} ~ 426 Hemi ~ Automatic
* 1 of 83

It was the end of 1970, and Charlie Castaldo {Scarsdale, New York} was selling his
Super/Stock Hemi Dart.

Charlie lived about 25 miles south of us.

Charlie had a 'For Sale' sign on Dart, and was asking about $6500 for the car, plus
a bunch of 'related Hemi parts' {Cylinder Heads, Pistons, Camshafts, etc.}

Charlie had been running the car in both Pro Stock and A/MP in 1970, but it was
still a 'pristine Super Stock car' and not hacked up.

I begged my father to try to buy it, but he 'wouldn't pull the trigger'.

One Sunday after racing at Dover Drag Strip in November 1970 {end of the season},
we met Charlie at the local Diner in Wingdale, and asked him about the Dart. He
said he was having a difficult time selling it, and had lowered the price.

I told my father to 'Make-A-Deal' as Charlie was a good guy and would probably
be flexible.

My father never made an offer..........

Here is the Dart in July 1969.

A couple...

My grandmother's 1971 Chrysler T&C 3-row wagon--I drove it many times but never owned it. Dark Green over black, PS, PB, A/C, had a potent 440 TNT, the HD suspension & tow package...when it needed brakes, my uncle and I installed police-spec metallic linings. (Mechanically, it was pretty much a CHP car without the black steering wheel!) She sold it, I wanted it, but was persuaded by my uncle to not get it because it needed work i couldn't do or afford to have done. (In hindsight, he's right.) Happy ending: it was sold to a guy who loved C-bodies (he came to look at it in a mid-60's Imperial), he repaired it and still has it.

Odd one: 1977 (might have been 78) Dodge D-150 pickup...2WD, longbed, seemed like an ordinary enough truck...except that it had power locks and windows, factory air, cloth seat (though no carpet)...and hey, that's a 440 under the hood! I called the guy about 50 times, but nobody ever answered. It was eventually sold, no idea what happened to it. :(

What was her problem with the 'Cuda?

(And what was involved in de-swamping your Dart?)

Mr. Jarlaxle,,,,,,

My girlfriend hated the big back window, and said that the 1966 Barracuda was
too old and 'Farty Looking'.

De-Swamping the 1970 Dart 'Swinger 340'

My girlfriend drove it into a Swamp, about 75 Feet in. She split a bunch of those
skinny {1" in Diameter"} Swamp Tree's and side-swiped a bunch of them, which
scratched up the paint along each side of the entire body.

Ripped apart the Torque-Flite Transmission Fluid Pan, and bent the Driveshaft.

Bent the Front Bumper, and all of the front trim components.

And more................

The Dart was stuck in about a foot of mud and murky slop.

Back in the early 80's I had a chance to buy a 1970 Challenger RT that was loaded. 440, Auto on floor, Vitamin C paint, Burnt orange interior, 6-way driver seat, Gator Grain vinyl top, sun roof, air conditioning, luggage rack, electric windows, ps, pb, cruise control, AM/FM, & rear defrost. Cragar SS rims and had a brand new paint job for $3,500. It was getting almost 20 mpg. We believe it was a promo car. Only option it didn't have was the factory 8-track. But one owner lost the 2 data tags so it was undocumented. But we knew they were all legit factory options.

Around the same time a 1969 Dart GTS 383 Dark Metallic Green for $4,000. All original but had fender-well headers. Wasn't a big fan of green at the time. During that time I was restoring a 1970 'cuda AAR Rallye Red, 4-speed, and my daily driver was a 1970 'cuda 440 6-barrel, 4-speed, Vitamin C, Shaker hood, and 3.55 Dana. And letting the good times roll.

What was involved in extraction and repair?
How the hell did she manage THAT?
Did you ever let her drive it again? :)
Why, exactly, didn't you dump her on the spot? :D
*runs*

Mr. Jaraxle,

* Extraction and Repair,

Required a 'Heavy Duty Tow Truck' with a 75 foot cable to pull it out the 'murky waters'.

Luckily, we were friends with the Towing Company, who brought the Dart back to their shop,
and they 'steam-cleaned' the entire car, under-carriage and engine compartment for 'Free'.

Repair wise;

It needed a new Driveshaft (Connecticut Driveshaft}, Automatic Transmission Fluid-Pan,
Transmision Mount and Fluid Lines.

The mufflers were moderately 'mashed', but still functional.

A new driver-side Engine Motor Mount also.

Body Parts, it required a new Front Bumper and Brackets, front splash-pan, Grille and chrome
trim moldings, and antenna.

Luckily, the 'Twin-Scoop' Performance Hood was 'not' touched during the 'Swamp Drive-Thru'.

Both front Rally Wheels were bent, and the Goodyear Polyglass GT G70 x 14" RWL Tires were sliced.

The Dart did require a front-end alignment, and I think both lower ball-joints
were ripped out, along with some steering components.

The FE "Bright Red" paint along both sides of the Dart required 'wet-sanding' and
and a 'buff-and-polish' job. Luckily, 'no dents'.

Just saw this for some reason. That is awesome! BTW, I am positive this is that M-code from Ohio that I missed out on.

There is another thread here on it. The car, the rusted areas, the timing, everything points to this car.:banghead:

Not a Mopar but the ONE car I didn't buy and should have ........and could have afforded it........

was around 70-71 right after I was stationed at NAS Miramar in San Diego. Saw an AC Cobra --probably a smallblock, and I don't even remember what he wanted, but I paid 3K for my 70 440-6 RR with about 30K on the clock, and it strikes me this was "similar priced."

I'll never know why I thought buying that car wasn't a good idea, but I think "lack of room" and "poor weather protection," ya, like I needed that in San Diego, LOL

And for you young'ins this was long, LONG before any such thing as a "Cobra Kit" or "Cobra Repop" was invented, LOL This Was The Real Deal

i was in the market looking for a project back in 2002.
A local ad had listed a 1942 dodge 1/2 ton pickup. I went to look at it and drooled all over it. It did need some work but i was going to pull the engine.

The asking price was a bit steep for my college days, but i begged and pleaded with my parents to loan me a few dollars, but they insisted i didnt need a project truck. I went back after the summer with all the cash in my hand from working every day for the whole summer without taking a vacation, but the guy sold it to someone else that had a few more pennies then the agreed upon price.
