Converter on a budget, need help to get it moving!

Me and my brother came to the conclusion that we have enough parts laying around to make a dart sport move on it's it' power if we had a converter. Here's what we have: Smogger two barrel 360. Torquefight 727. 323 gears. Some cop wheels with 295/50's Low rise dual plane Eddy intake. Shitty...

    Torque converter

OK, I wanted to ask this before but waited till all the stuff was mentioned above. After launch, how much effect, if any at all, does the torque converter have on the RPM drop from first to second and second to third? I was under the impression that those variables could be adjusted somewhat...

    Darn good info, appreciate it.

    Street Gear Poll

You are right in that I should have picked an RPM range, HOWEVER, How many times do you see 3.23 would be a good gear for the street, without any other info. SO.... I just want to know what everybody else is running. And I left the first post wishy washy to get all these ideas, such as yours.

That RPM drop is something I have been considering. It will be a 318, since I already have a forged crank for it.

    Street Gear Poll

Im gonna play the devils advocate on this, and say: If you cant do the work to get a 28 inch tall tire under a 68 dart, perhaps you dont need the lower gears. This is gonna go under a 73 Dart Sport

    Street Gear Poll

I am fine with between 3000 and 3500. But I dont know how that adjusts other things on the car, such as converter heat and such. Kinda wondering what the folks on here that run the lower gears actually run. I was considering 3.55 but now that I have been driving around those 3.91 are...

    Street Gear Poll

OK, Been driving around in my toyota tundra with the overdrive off to see what I think about 3.91 gears on the street/highway. My trips are about 20 miles of 70 MPH driving. My truck rolls along at about 3200 RPM at 70MPH. IT has a VVTI V6 in it. My plans for my a body are a mild 318 with a...

    8.25 suregrip

I took an 8.25 out of a 72 D100 that blew out and put in a 9.25 out of a 83 Extended cab half ton (D150). The only thing I had to do was use one of those conversion U joints. Other than that it was a bolt in. Matter of fact I was in a bind cause I had to go to work the next morning. It was...

    Should I run a 2.74 first in my 904?

I scored a LA Roller 318 engine from my brother. I am planning on putting EQ heads on it, a Weiand Action Plus intake, Thermoquad, and regrinding the cam. I have a case, front pump, and input shaft out of a 904. I also have two A999 transmissions. The 8 1/4 rear end currently has an...

    a999 trans

+1, easy check before pulling the tranny too. If you do decide to rebuild it, I saw a series of videos on youtube that seemed liked they had alot of detail. Might want to look at those before taking it on. Does anybody have this CD ROM? I know the 727/904 manual is pretty good. I...

    Narrowing Costs

I am planning on moser axles for sure. I would like to go to a better bearing on the end, and be able to use factory application mopar brake setups (OEM or Aftermarket). The only three firm decisions I have made on this diff is to use the 3.55 gears, a truetrac diff, and the mentioned moser...

    Narrowing Costs

OK, I HAVE an 9 1/4 axle I already want to use. I already read up on the 8.8 and dont want to go that route.

    Narrowing Costs

Whats the average costs to have a 9 1/4 diff narrowed? I got one out of a durango, along with the leafs and drum brakes. Planning on narrowing it to the same dimensions as the original 8 1/4 and either using the durango drum brakes or the original drums off the back of my 73 dart sport. Also...

    rebuild a torque converter?

Thanks. Thats what I was hoping. Shouldnt be an issue finding a shop that can flush it out. I cant remember if it had a drain plug or not. But Ill let the shop handle all of that stuff. Thanks again.

    rebuild a torque converter?

Are shops still doing rebuilds? I got an old converter that came out of a 340 car. Supposed to be a high stall converter. I know its not much of a converter, but it will get my car going. Problem is that its been sitting for something like ten years in the corner of the shop. At one time it...

    Dana 60.

In south louisiana it isnt easy too find an 8 3/4 a body rear end (What I originally wanted to go with). However, 9 3/4 diffs are everywhere. By the time I ship everything to get the 8 3/4 it would be costly. The only thing is that alot of the 9 3/4 are gonna be full floating. Are these full...

    5 friction/clutch clearance issue in a 904

What about finding a 999, throwing in the lower gears, using the front drum and pump with his 904 input shaft to build a non lockup 904/999. Not so much for the five clutches, but for the lower gear for that mild 273. I agree that there is really no need for a five clutch setup on a mild 273.

    Part throttle kickdown setup.

I am building a 904/999 geared tranny for a mild street 318. I am on the hunt for the correct kickdown parts that are used on the valve body. All of the ones that I have are the type that have some aluminum sandwiched between the valve body and a steel plate. IIRC the one I want is a single...

    A999 Bellhousing Q

I did some searching and found that the 87-88 years had a three speed. A few different places stated this same thing, then I found this http://www.dakota-truck.net/infosheet.html Says that the a-998 was supposedly that three speed.

    Tranny Recommendations for 600 HP

Dont they both have a pressed in sprag with weak dowel pins? Isnt it a sprag failure that causes a first gear burnout grenade? If so than they should both be prone to the blowups.

    Tranny Recommendations for 600 HP

I am going out on a limb, and may be wrong, but in the top right of the tranny pan it looks as though the hole for the dipstick is on a kicked out portion on the pan. IIRC one tranny has the kickout (I cant remember which) and one doesnt. Also, I think he ought to build the tranny he...

    Basic 904 rebuild kit

Does anybody know any good deals on rebuild kits for the 904? I just dont see spending big bucks on high dollar friction material and stuff for a 904. I have a non lockup and plan on putting some 999 gears into it. It will go behind a 350 horse 318. the only real performance mod I have...

    Building the 999 geared 904

A few years ago MA magazine had an article on putting 999 gears into a non lockup 904. Well I have a non lockup 904, The four gear 999 planetaries, A non lockup input shaft and pump, Non lockup valve body, five clutch front drum and most of the other parts mentioned in the article...
