How much lift is safe on a set of valve springs on a 302 head ? I wont be spinning big rpm, just a driver/ cruiser..no racing. Budget is tight.

Depends on there age but if your just cruising Ide run them if you get on it and have valve float then you know what to do. Your probably good for 475ish lift.

Anyone else ? I don't plan to put in the largest lift cam. But would like some input of lift limit.

My starting point is 340 valve spring. Used is fine. Did you decide on a cam? You really need to consider that. Stock installed height is around 1.69 inches.

Still working on that. I have a cam I got years ago for a small block. All I know about it is, hydraulic & .450" lift. Its got these numbers stamped on it 458230 any ideas "
I'm going to post those numbers, see if I get anything.
What to you think about the stock 340 cam, for a low rpm driver 273? to much/ bad choice ?

I love that cam, but since you are putting it in the truck it might be a little big for you. I don't think I would go any bigger. It would scream though. I did e-mail Isky about a comparable hydraulic cam to the E-4 solid cam, but they never got back to me. If you have the .450 lift cam and the lobes look good, go for it. Make sure your lifters are not dished. Was that the cam that was in your motor?

Something I got at a swap meet. Was raining hard , the guy was cold and wet. got used cam/ lifters/roller chain and gears/ with adjustable rocker arms and shafts all used $15.00 how do you say NO ?
The guy said (as I remember it was a mopar cam 759 maybe/ I don't know any more) but it was not big enough for his 340 duster....a good day to be at the rainy swap meet....just wish I could remember.

The 759 Mopar cam would be probably be good for you. .430 lift and 260 duration. Sounds like a deal and a half. Also that it was not big enough for his 340. Where are you in your engine build? Can you install the cam and put a dial indicator on a lifter to get lift at the lobe. Maybe a degree wheel to get a feel for duration. Good time to TDC the Damper.

I've got the upper half off. Have to pull the T cover off, and get to the cam. Pistons are +.030 flat top, crank still in, but good, bores look good. Going to install 302 heads with thin head gaskets....soon
