hey guys i am ready to pull my 383 with 4 speed out of my 68 barracuda. I want to know if the engine will clear the steering shaft with the factory exhaust manifolds and the starter left on the engine? thanks

I would at least pull the left side loose from the engine as it hugs the steering shaft why fight the inevitable and risk denting, bending and scratching things. The starter is probably is a non issue.

Why not just pull K frame and all right out the bottom, if it will clear.

Yes i have both manifolds hanging on the studs. I wanted to leave the steering shaft connected and i will be pulling it alone. i am hoping it will clear with no snags. thanks

I am just bragging but I pulled my 440/727 out by myself. The steering column was not in the car. But I have a tubular K-frame. ;) But still amazing for me.

I think small block only.
383, 440 and even Hemis not a problem. On a Hemi you just have
to wait to put the valve covers on until you're clear of the shock
towers.

This means that the engine, trans and headers are all together
going in or out. you just drain the fluids, disconnect the steering
coupler and pull the steering shaft up from inside the car. Usually
take a bungee cord and loop through the steering wheel and hook
to the driver's seat headrest.

Here, we're looking at the procedure in reverse (install).

With the front of the body on jackstands and the rear wheels on ramps
for height to clear the rear bumper when the car is tilted up, hook a cherry
picker to the engine/trans/K-frame assembly.

Radiator out, pop the lower ball joints loose, slide the torsion bars
out and unbolt the driveshaft, trans crossmember and K-frame bolts.

Now, lower the engine/trans/K-frame assembly onto a rollable cart.
Hook the cherry picker onto the front of the body (bumper bolt points
work) and lift the body up so you can roll the engine etc assembly away.

You you make a dedicated cart and also a "tricycle wheel" assembly to
bolt in place of the removed K-frame, then you can just roll the car away.
It doesn't seem to hardly weigh anything once the powertrain is removed.

As in 62BT409's Demon Hemi install thread, you don't even need to remove
the hood. Procedures and lots of pictures here:

wow the old hemi's fit good, wonder why the shock towers are so much of an issue on the 5.7/6.1 hemi? are they wider?

I never thought about it. Maybe Denny can chime in. He's had one in his
mock-up and now offers the HDK mounts for them but they always go in
the mock-up from the top because of the mock-up's rolling frame.

I know several guys have bought those mounts, so maybe they can
comment on dropping the body over one. It does look pretty "fat".

Thanks guys maybe i will do it like that

I would get the exhaust manifolds out of there before pulling the engine from the top. Just loosen the motor mounts and lift the engine slightly on each side to get them out. You don't want to break an ear off. Should be good to go if you drop it out the bottom.

It's only 5 bolts and a roll pin for the column to drop out and slide back. I'd do that, remove the starter, and pull it.

Got her out. Thanks guys

I have a question about a steel sleave i found on my garage floor as i was rolling the engine out from the car. It is aprox 2" long and 3/8" inside dia. I dont know if it is from the body or k frame etc. Or maybay not even from the car at all. But i started with a clean floor. It is bugging me. I will post a pic of it later. And i found it near the pas side front wheel well. Thanks

Here is the bushing / sleave i am talking about. anybody have any ideas? Thanks

When I did my 69 383 Barracuda I had to take the left manifold off to pull the engine and put it back in. But everything else was installed on the engine when I put it back in from the top. Good Luck

Will clear no problems. Just done the same job in my 67 barracuda 383/ 4 speed. I dropped the 4 speed first, removed hood, removed exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, some wiring and it came straight out.
Its a good time to check all of your bushes and ball joints at this point.
Oh yeah and have a good look at the Freeze plug/welsh plug that hides under the engine mount. I think its the left side on the block.:burnout:

Darren, what are your plans? Resto or just a rebuild. I'm working on my big block GTS and found that having a tumbler comes in hand in cleansing all those small parts such as bolts, washers, nuts, fittings etc.

My plans are to replace the cam, valve springs, valve seals, timming chain and some gaskets. Also new clutch kit. And do the front suspension also. The car is a formula S all matching numbers. So i dont want to play with it to much. Thanks
