Big block 383 build!

-
Yeah I gonna stay with Hensleys and they know what they are doing!I was gonna use aluminum intake but Ken Hensley said with my build being a mild low deck the stock 4barrel intake would work just as good! Also got the balancer, pushrods and flexplate.Still got to get heads done, get carb and headers, and 727 rebuilt!Still debating on holley 750 dp or using holley 3310!Got 489 case for rear but gotta buy suregrip and 3.91 or 4.10 gear which still debating gear!

Called machine shop and everything rotating assembly should be ready next week and gonna buy parts to rebuild my heads this week then all i have to get is carb, headers, tranny rebuilt and need 3.91 gear and suregrip for my 489 case!

I think it's a mistake to not zero deck the block. The block is taller than the factory advertised height. Some are MUCH taller. I think you will be struggling to make 9:1 depending on that height. Especcially on the B wedges they need to be decked to blueprint height.
Otherwise - wicked cool. I swapped a 400 into my truck years ago when it was still 2wd. It was a blast with a 3.91 SG.

The pist are kb with dome and if they sit .027 in the hole I will still be around 9.3 depending on cc of the 906 heads!I would have zero decked but it was already machined 30 over when i got it and had never been put together. My truck has been down for over 5 yrs and I dont make awhole lot of money but I am gonna build a new 440 after couple of years.Right now i just wanna drive! But it might be zero decked will not know till i put it together! The guy that machined it died so if it is zerodecked it will be over 10 to 1.

Alright!Got a call from Ken at Hensleys friday and the crank and rods are done and they ordered pistons, rings, bearings and balancer.Hoping to be done with it this week and start putting together and take pics!Still have to take heads over and let ken work them over as found out one head had burnt valves so gonna have them completely redone! Also decided on 2800-3200 stall and buying 4.10s for my 489 case and need to get suregrip for it.I rebuilt a 650 dp for it but gonna tune it!Will post more soon.Sorry for long wait Hensleys is backed up!

Ok just to let people know it has been awhile but i pick up rotating assembley from hensleys in 2 weeks when income tax gets here!So gonna start putting motor back together but now need to ask another question!Got my 906 heads took apart and inspected them and found 1 head must have got water in it and looks like new guides and seats are gonna have to be put in!So my question is do i put out the money to fix 906's or should i buy 440 source stealth heads and what should be done to them out of box? Thanks for any replies!

Go with the 440 source heads or a set of Edelbrock RPM if you can scrape a little more money together.Either is money well spent over stock heads

If anyone thinks that the stock manifold won't make much difference, perhaps our testing might change their mind. Here are the airflow figures for a Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder head and the same head, same port with an 850 Demon carburetor and 5 different intake manifolds, including a FACTORY CAST IRON INTAKE from a 1969 383 Road Runner.

1) mild touch up on a RPM Performer Head, no carb, no manifold
2) same head with an 850 cfm Demon carb and FACTORY IRON 4-BBL intake from a 1969 Road Runner
3) 850 Demon and RPM Performer intake
4) 850 Demon and Torker II intake
5) 850 Demon and M1 Single plane
6) 850 Demon and 383 Victor

Lift...........1...........2..........3.........4.........5..........6

.100........72..........69........71........71........72........72
.200.......150........131......145.......148......148.......150
.300.......212........172......195.......201......201.......202
.400.......254........187......228.......242......234.......240
.500.......276........199......240.......254......254.......261

.600.......290........203......251.......264......266.......271
.700.......302........204......256.......269......273.......280

Lets not even consider .600" and .700" lift right now. If you use what might be the best street dual plane manifold availabe now, the Edelbrock RPM Performer, you will gain 14 cfm @ .200", 23 cfm @ .300", 41 cfm @ .400" lift and 41 cfm @ .500" lift.

Will the stock manifold work? Sure. Will it be as good, on a mild engine build, as a good aftermarket aluminum intake? NEVER!

Yeah I decided I am gonna order them just want to make sure ready to go out of box!

Never trust anyone's OOTB head to be good OOTB. I recommend you take any head, from any manufacture, to a trusted mechanic and have him check the guide clearance, seats and valves, spring tension, retainers and locks. 440 Source is trying, but their locks, even if it is said they are Comp Cams, should be replaced with good 10 degree stuff.

Well with the 906 heads i was gonna use stock intake but now I am gonna get performer rpm to match but I have two carbs to choose from!650 holley dp or holley 3310 750!Have both!Ok will let machine shop check them and change locks but will springs be ok for my cam?

If you are still using the Comp 280H, then yes the 440 Source valve springs should work. All the 440 Source springs I have tested have the same spring pressures as the Comp Cams 911 springs that are recommended for the 280H cam.

Have the mechanic double check the springs to be sure. I do this on all the 440 Source heads we set up.

IQ52,Do you sell them and If you do how much for them? Also my pistons are kb400 and i get it back with income tax with crank and rods but do not know how far in the hole they will sit but will those heads work! And yes cam is comp 280h!

Well finally have made up my mind,I am going to order the stealth heads and have them checked all over and the block is coming off stand and going to get decked!Compression with stealth heads is gonna be little over 10.1 with .040 thick gaskets with prw 1.6 stainless rockers with the comp 280 cam and should bring it up around 510-515 lift!Performer Rpm and holley 650 dp and hooker headers!Stall is gonna be 2800-3200 and 3.91 gear!

I also want to thank everyonefor their responses and telling me to deck the block so I am going to listen! Thanks and will post pics hopefully soon!

No I don't sell the Stealth heads, just rebuild and port them.

Got some of the pistons in and pistons sit .024 thousandths in the hole!I ordered 452 heads with 2.14/1.81 valves from aerohead so i couldnt afford the stealths but gonna use .020 steel shim head gasket and compression will be around 9.6 to 1!Will post pics!
