For the record, here is a link showing available electric car chargers across the US and Canada. Actually worldwide. Click on any pin to see what type of charger. The orangeish ones are Tesla Superchargers. And to answer an earlier question there are 3 Tesla Superchargers in South Dakota along I-90. Electric cars and motorcycles make pretty good sense for some people and situations. As to whether they are overall "green", considering the mining of lithium, cobalt, nickel, etc, no they are not green. But neither is oil. Different strokes for different folks.

OK I'll "answer your question" which is biased for a specific reason and geared toward "your" answer, and of course, "you don't agree" so now you are going to call me "clutter."

"My Car:" Doesn't matter what brand type, or fuel. I want it to start when I want it to start, and without having to "fill up" the tank with "something" that takes hours and hours to fill whatever that is up with.

That clear enough? Can your "green thing" do that? No. Will it ever? Not in my lifetime.

Here's the thing "sweetheart" .........if you are not up to dissenting discussion and opinions, you are in the wrong world here. It's not that "we are not ready" for ever ready powered cars, it's that they are the wrong technology.........It's that "bad" as gasoline/ diesel cars seem to be, there isn't anything better or cost effective or actually greener, except possibly for fuel cells, and they cost......BIG!!
 
It really is no big surprise as to why we are 20 trillion in debt! How many"solyndra's" must the American taxpayer endure before we understand the actual futility of electric vehicles at this point? We don't know the actual cost of this stupidity but I guarantee that liberals can tell you how great they are. We actually need to be concerning ourselves with what works instead of grasping at straws. Electric motors have their place but the actual infrastructure to support this is phenomenal and has not been addressed as yet,and the reason being "it is overpriced"!!!!
 
Meh, I guess that's as non defensive and respectful as it gets around here. I'm happy. You guys ever check out those electric assist bikes with big fat tires on em? Pretty much a little motorcycle with pedals. I took one for a test ride the other day. Total blast. Our of my price range as a college student, but a bunch of fun!
 
At an estimated cost of $200000 and that is two hundred thousand American taxpayer dollars"each" how "affordable" are they now and how many years will it be until they will be even in the ballpark"affordable"??? If you are actually just wanting "fun" then please leave the taxpayer out of the equation!!! What fools we have become when you say"children are dying" but you will spend this astronomical figure on sheer lunacy!
 
I don't believe I brought the kids or the taxpayer into the conversation. I did bring fun. And to be fair to the person who did bring the children into the conversation, a death toll or atrocities committed in the name of oil would have to be assessed. That said, I still won't be buying an electric vehicle.

You brought"taxpayers" into it when they are subsidized by "taxpayers"! So please understand these"follies" are being paid for by tax dollars-not personal dollars. This type of stupidity could never be continued by the private sector! Only government can fight windmills and assure the stupidity of the donors!!!
 
I understand what you are saying about govt subsidies, but I personally did not bring that to the table in any of my posts on this thread. I said I share certain suspicions that other members had brought up.

There is a car called the white zombie that races out of Portland...datsun 510 I believe... he turns some impressive numbers. But it's all about application innit. I don't like the govt subsidy thing. If an idea can stand on its own, it might be a good idea. Case by case.
 
Interesting discussion. Maintenance/repair is one thing,dealing with the brakes is dangerous,as well as dealing with the high voltage. The tech in the next service bay gets the insulated shepherd's hook to knock the tech off whatever is electrocuting him.
The training,tools and shop equipment is expensive and different procedures for every brand.
Dealing with a collision,emergency personnel need special training and equipment-also expensive/overpriced.
Body shops need special training /equipment to deal with repairs and special paint processes to recoat the fancy lightweight materials they are built with.

HOW IS THIS BETTER??
Great profit for instructors,tooling manufacturers and safety equipment manufacturers. Not to mention the small shops that cannot upgrage missing out on the work. A prime unrelated example is fords fancy aluminum body components,shutting down body shops that cant do the work.

But that's not the reality.

The reality is that folks will let their "thinking" actually do their thinking.

I have a neighbor around here somewhere with a Leaf. He does 20 mph in a 55 zone to make sure he has enough battery to get him to town twenty minutes away with almost continuous hills and then run his errands to be able to get back home.

There's no infrastructure built in in the area for him to be able to run at speed with all the hills and keep his battery up to be able to do his running. No stops along the way to recharge.

He wasn't assessing his vehicle needs, he was assessing the idea he wanted to be "green" and didn't think beyond that.

And that's where the conversation ends. People aren't "thinking" at all.

And, I'm sorry to say, you can back up a bit with the assessing needs, considering you actually brought a lot of what's being addressed to the table, especially with the comment about Musk putting "his" money up for the charging stations. That was an assumption on your part. That's "our" money Musk is using.

So, are you assessing that or...?

Funny thing about solar farm construction, in Californnia anyway. They cover hundreds of acres, and "cover" is the propper word to use. Usually they are located in very rural unwanted desert territory. It's wanted by the creatures that formerly lived there. A biologist watches every phase of the construction to "protect" these creatures. WTH do they think is going to happen to those lovely creatures when they "shade" their former residence 24 hours per day? It has to change the environment. I get that the desert environment is expendable to ecologists at UC Berkley or at the State Capitol. They don't like looking at it. Kind of hypocrytical when you chase the dune buggies/MC/ATV out of Dumont or Glamis or Pismo because "they" are ruining the environment and approve thousands of acres of environmental change in the name of $ for PG&E or SDG&E or SCE. Ok? Who put me on this soap box? One good thing. If you invested in the Chinese producers of the vast majority of solar panels, you did well.

Around here they buy up unused fields and set them up.

I've got one right across the hedgerow dividing our property from the property next door.

Easy hook up. They'll even pay for the wire burial. I only have to pay four to five times per kWh for the privilege.

As far as solar panels on the roof, I don't know about CA, but NY gives huge taxbreaks for putting them on. So, in the end, who really pays for them?
 
Farm ground around here is too expensive to waste on Solar Farms. I was told in the not to distant past Vandenberg AFB was putting in their own solar farm. Now let's think about that for a moment. VAFB is fogged in until noon about 120 days/year. Sounds like a fine investment. :wtf:

Yeah I looked at them here in wa too. They said that they still work under cloud cover. Dunno, big up front investment. Too much for me. Locally made too. Just has to be the right deal. Seems to have its merits, but might be too betamax right now. We will see. The electric motors are powerful, just the Batt situation seems lame. Got to get one of those "back to the future" nuclear garbage rectifiers.

As the years go by and gas prices rise ( remember just a few years ago when gas hit $5 /gal.) you will see the EV's become more attractive.

BTW I put 5k net solar on my roof 5 years ago and haven't had an electric bill during the fall, winter and spring since and reduced my summer bills . Now that I have an EV it raised my use ever so slightly.

Here in California we produce more Solar power then the utilities will buy so we are giving it to Arizona.

At this time the sun belt states are the leaders in solar and EV's.
As time goes by the rest will follow. It may take until 2040 but it will happen.

How electric is produced and how it will be stored in the future will no doubt change to yet to be invented systems.

But right now it's solar , wind and hydro that are the green sources . Lithium batteries are the prime storage at this time and that will change over time.

As for the used batteries coming out of EV's they are being used as back up power for business and soon for your home as more become available. When they are finally depleted they will be recycled.

The Future is here compared to the 1990's .

Solar on your roof is great unless you live in the midwest. I have a sizable portion of my roof that faces the south. Perfect location for panels. Id love to put enough to spin my meter backwards and recieve a check from the power company.

Problem is we also get wicked hail storms. So yeah its gonna cost me money to put up. I dont mind that. What i do mind is when the storms come through and smash it all to ****. Thats the same reason i have a metal roof on my home. Got tired of replacing shingled roofs ever 4 years or so.

Had. Hailstorm so bad one year we had grapefruit sized hail. If you did not have metal roof those iceballs from hell actually would go right through the roof plywood and through your ceiling. No joke.

So yeah solar is great if you live in an environment thats kind to it. Mine is not.
