Progress, even if nearly a standstill.........I think I finally got the correct disc coming, this time from RockAuto. These God Damned so called parts stores don't have it and claim "they can't get it." 5 speed is together and sitting on planks on the frame, and as soon as the clutch arrives I'll get that all together. I "may" jig it up first without the clutch to attempt to get the transfer case shifter located and measured for the cab hole. As you can see I now have the cab, once again, hanging on the hoist.
I plan to install the transmission using a simple come-a-long from a cross piece on the hoist arms. Believe it or not, I can install the TF case by hand. Just not "overhead!!!"
I'm not planning on doing anything to the TF case. It spins quietly by hand OK, and the lube looked OK. I've also got the one from the automatic V10 which could be converted if necessary

LOL you ever seen a cleaner "under cab" for a 20 some year old truck? This thing is about as rust free as they come!!

Today, Sunday, waiting for new clutch disc to arrive tomorrow afternoon late................
"George saves the day." Not long ago a friend gave me TWO of the big heavy pullers meant to pull tapered axle hubs like pre-65 Mopars, Jeeps, IHC light trucks and scouts, Studes, and early Ferds. (Actually I have one of these, "someplace")
I could NOT get the fecking hubs apart in the parts axle, and I want those rotors!!! These are INBOARD so you don't just "remove" them. The aged 3/4 IR impact made an appearance as well. One came apart "whole" and on the other the spindle pulled out, leaving the inner cup and the 4 hole flange, which I'll probably heat to beat $h*t. I may just pull the whole knuckle off instead and keep it for spare.

DAMN!!! Last update last night claimed the clutch disc from RockAuto would be here "by end of day." It GOT here at 10:30AM!!!! It's 1PM, I'm eating lunch, watching Gunsmoke, and the trans is bolted up!!! Slid that ***** in there like it was on vaseline!!

Del are you going to put in the transfer case and finish the driveline before you drop the cab on?

Enjoying this thread and watching your progress.

4PM done for the day. Got the gearbox/ transfer case bolted in. The shifter off the V10 auto is not gonna fit without some work, it will not even bolt up to the transfer case adapter on the gearbox

WHY IS THE transfer case so damned dirty?? Because I got it "loose" and no good way to seal it up. Now that it's mounted, and I have a spare yoke in the rear, I can pressure wash it "I hope" tomorrow or next day

Got the cab back on the frame but only temporarily--I have to modify the transfer case shifter and mount, and this gets convoluted.

For starters, the shifter out of the V10 auto, gas, was mounted to the automatic. Measureing up compared to the stick, it's not off by much. Except that "it is." Because I have a factory "console" cup holder around the original shifter, and the left side has an oblong knockout with a cupholder, I need to make it fit that. Plus for reasons that are completely incomprehensible, they switched from "mounted to the transmission" to "mounted to the floor." What sense does THAT make. Anyhow it looks like I need to build a bracket, move it upwards about an inch, forwards about 2, and out to the left about an inch and a half.

Also on the infinite list of Chrysler's incompatibility, the distance from the bell to the transmission transfer case flange is shorter on the stick by a "big inch." This means that the front drive shaft splines bottom out. I did some close measuring today, and it looks like if I cut about 5/8--3/4" off the end of the splines (yeh that's cheating) it will have plenty of "bottoming" room. This thing is not gonna be used for "jumps"!!!!

And LOLOL WHY DIDNT you guys tell me I had ta cut the shock tower clearance in the fender aprons?? They are plastic, so a few minutes with aircraft snips and down we go

HUH!! Sits a little higher than it did previously!!

Wx report, much colder wx and rain Fri or Fri nite

Well, I cannot say that "this" was not unexpected. "I thought" I got a bit of water out of the transfer case which came with the "too short" frame. This of course is what fits the 5 speed setup, the other one out of the donor is different, and automatic
It turns out it will not come out of 4WD hi into 2WD high, so it will have to come apart. I decided early on to just get this all "jigged up" and deal with it later, as I have WAY too much **** to do, and rain and cold is a' comin. Once I finally get it together, running, and at least moveable, I can deal with it.
I should be able to use most of the automatic TC and "convert it" using parts from this one, assuming those parts aren't hammered.
"The other" interesting tidbit is that the OAL of the bell and 5 speed is maybe ? 1 1/2" shorter than the automatic, and the stick shift transfer case tail housing is also a bit shorter than the automatic one. This makes the driveshaft out of the 97 V10 auto "a bit too short." It is useable "for now." I checked, we actually are seeing a bit more than 4" spine engagement, the yoke is well into the rear bushing. The other weird deal is that the V10 driveshaft is the smallest I've seen lately. I had both a late 90's 1/2T and a gas 3/4T and BOTH had shafts near the size of the Cummins. Since that V10 is a bit of a powerhouse, "I'm surprised"

I was going to work on the transfer case shifter mount today, but there was a lot more to do, and did not get to it. Supposed to start rain and cool off late EDIT Friday, so hopefully I'll have enough time. Looks cold and wet next 10 days

****. Bad weather is here, and earlier than I'd hoped. During lunch it rained, and got some of the tools wet. I had just gotten the cab set back down and all 8 mount bolts started. "I was intending" to go ahead in that direction, but bear in mind I've pulled out the defective transfer case. I'm now thinking "STOP" and fix the TC before reconnecting the engine systems, as it is just SO damn much easier to stick it back in on the ground, with the cab off.
I do have a homebrew hi lift trans jack from a converted cherry picker but still ............Next few days of rain will be a *****. Summer is for sure gone and we may be bypassing "fall"

Yeah, it's even a lot cooler here now than it usually gets.

Yeah, much the same way here. Roller coastering up and down. A friend of mine calls it menopause season....burning up one day and freezing the next!

Very little today. Got into the transfer case before it started to rain, and then it rained ALL DAY

TC is not hurt the water may have been just a little from ?? no rust, etc inside. Shifting issue may/ likely is missing pads/ inserts on shift fork. Got them ordered

Well heck yeah! I still call that progress!

WOW!!! 1:30pm Saturday. We have a "break" in the rain. It rained last night but so far today's been dry. I tore down BOTH transfer cases and swapped input shafts (the stick shaft is different spline than automatic) and JUST got through setting the TC and rear driveshaft in place. I just had the cab mount bolts "started" so I just pulled them out, cut loose the reverse light wire, and lifted the cab again. HOPEFULLY this will be "it" for the musical tranfer cases. (And the cab "yo yo" LOL

That's it's name. Duncan. Like the yo-yo. I know. Now some whipper snapper is gonna ask "what's a yo-yo?" LOL

MAN!! This turned out to be a DAY!! Just started to sprinkle a bit as I was coming in. Converted the auto transfer case to "stick" by swapping input shafts, got the TC and driveshaft in, got the clutch hooked up, and the cab back down and all 8 mounts tight. NOW the work can begin---depending on wx..............
