The topless adventures of Cuda Al

After tackling the grills I'm tempted to do the original trunk trim as well instead of the repop. Is this repop Al?

Hard to say, the edges look a little soft.
This is my Fastback,

The easiest way to tell is to show it lined up with the taillight bezel. Originals are different top and bottom because the slope and surface width of the bezel is different at the top and the bottom. Each piece of trim has a top slope and a bottom slope, and a top surface width and a bottom surface width, divided by the black stripe. All 4 of these features should line up with the bezel. Closing the trunk lid would give you a better idea. One thing, they should be clearly different from each other. The repros are exactly the same top and bottom, which is the problem.

I just noticed my trunk lid isn't closing properly on the right side... better look at the left side. The widths of the surface flats should roughly match, the angle of the surface should match, and the angles of the return bevels should match. The widths aren't a precise fit, but the angles should be right on.

Hard to tell, thanks guys. I'll have to pull out original set to compare.

Time for a run of updates...

When I first got the car it had speakers in otherwise perfect door panels.

New door panels were installed and the speakers moved to the kick panels.

May have to have a custom color mixed.
Not shown, while at it I replaced the arm rest basses and door pulls

When I put the new master cylinder in I noticed that the housing didn't cover the hole in the firewall.

Not wanting water or anything else getting in I chose to cover it up.

Without pulling the master I put the fiber gasket in first (cut bottom open).
IMG_5695.JPG

Placed a sheet metal piece in.

Then the foam.

Finally the master

With the car starting to look real nice I felt a few areas needed improvement. First the door jams were overlooked on the previous repaint and had flaking paint. While I was at it I had him shoot the inside of the trunk.

While the car was at the shop I had him paint a set of wheels to match the car.

With the trunk cleaned up I couldn't leave the ratty taillight harness.

With the inside of the trunk painted I cleaned up the jack, put in a new mat.
The latch and catch were cleaned up in the process, along with all the bumper hardware.
The new ECS trunk decal was put in towards the left. Interesting note: this is a late 67 (May) car and it has the solid inside trunk panel without the punched out sections.

With the door jams painted most of the hardware had been painted over at one time or another. I removed some of them one at a time alternately so I could refinish them and not have the components fall into the door. The latch was painted in place, not restoration perfect but better than being painted blue.

Day 1: Lompoc – North Las Vegas

Once again I am taking the car on a road trip to Oregon. This time I’m taking an extra couple days to see some new places. For the most part day one was routes I have taken before, nothing special. Some time ago I plotted and alternate route from Barstow to Las Vegas to avoid the chaotic traffic on I-15. 60 miles of 2 lane road with almost no traffic, you can’t beat the scenery.

470 miles, average 15 mpg

Best thing to do with these cars... Drive them...

Day 2: North Las Vegas – Salt Lake City

The main attraction was Valley of Fire just north of Las Vegas. I had only seen a few pictures and didn’t plan any time to do some hikes. Well worth the effort. The trip continued up to Salt Lake City. For some reason I just love the Virgin River Gorge, third time. I think the crazy part is how it seemingly comes out of nowhere.

Day 3: Salt Lake City – Baker City Oregon

Had a couple stops in Salt Lake City, nothing special then hit the road. I did stop in Twin Falls for lunch and checked out the gorge while I was there.

You need to slow down.. To many miles means you haven't appreciated the small towns along the way... Besides what's the rush?

My dad grew up in Huntington, OR. To him, Baker was "the city". Don't know if you passed through Huntington on yoor route.

Whenever I can I like to get off the beaten path and take the path less traveled, sometimes my trips are more about getting somewhere. Some of these places I have been through, some I plan to check out more. Either way I probably see more than most people I know.

I was on I-84 that bypassed it sometime in the 80s, that is the sort of detour that I love to take when I know about them.

Day 4: Baker City Oregon – Astoria Oregon

Day started off a little off, when I got on the highway I saw smoke coming out the right side so I pulled off to investigate. Oil was fine (just checked it at the hotel), good oil pressure, no notable sounds which was a little hard to notice as the right side exhaust flange has a notable leak. I move on.

Sometime later I stop for gas and when I got off the highway the exhaust leak sounded like open headers. I get my flashlight out and start looking around notice one of the flange bolts was coming out (lost its nut). I go get lunch and start planning my action. Located an Exhaust shop but they were closed, headed to an O’Reilly get a gasket and some nuts and bolts, I get setup and figured I better get some jack stands (was planning on shoving the spare under the car), got it all together and hit the road. The fix and chasing parts took about two hours.

I had already replaced the gasket once, I suspect the pipe isn’t square to the manifold not allowing it to tighten properly, will address when I get back.

This trip was primarily about visiting family for an event, In a couple months I'll have all the time in the world for doing more.
Not sure when the return trip will be, probably a couple weeks.

What I first saw...

My cars get driven rain or shine. Recently I moved to Washington and at the time I didn't have a place to live. The cars were kept at my nieces place under car carvers (and plastic) till I got my own place. That happened pretty quick and was waiting till I was moved in to move the cars. Well the rain started being more frequent so I felt it was time to get them inside. Right now they are in the barn that will later be my shop, I'll be building a garage for the cars.

The interesting thing about this car is that it was originally sold new in Washington.
