One lifter has a hole in the wrong end. 4 more are all concave in and about to have an unwanted hole..... Camshaft is toast.

This was a good used cam and a set of new Sealed Power lifters 3 years ago.

Not enough zinc in the Rotella-T, or poor quality lifters? Or both?

Yeah well, diesel oil if for diesel engines… and yeah something wasn’t right, oil look burnt onto the cam and clearly the lifter was not spinning. The cam could have had an issue on those lobes …

A rebuild is in order…

Sorry for your loss.

Yeah that is nasty.

What lift on the cam?

Double Valve Springs too?

And that cams crown is gone, lifters will not spin. Look at the last lobe to the far right, it's shinny all the way across the top of the lobe.
Yes sir, take it all down and read some bearings and buy a good cam and a set of new lifters, and not the cheesy cam lifter kits in one, buy an inky cam and a good set of non box store lifters..
Watch some youtube videos on troubles with lifters, and cam shafts, instal properly videos as well.. you can do it

It is what it is. This was an experimental throw together with used part, except the lifters. I put the original 318 back in.

Yeah the Rotella has been dropping zinc content for years plus it doesn't have the right additive packages for a gas engine.

Witch would be a bummer for me, I ran nothing but rotella in my 170 /6 , a half bottle of zink additive and hit the road , i enjoyed watching your video of the grocery trip, your Vixin (Hell I can't spell this evening) is a strong and very well built slanty, brought back memories.

As long as you had real zinc additive, you were fine. The Rotella by itself won't cut it. While it's still not formulated for gas engines, I'm sure Victoria's old trusty 170 is just fine. And thanks! We always have great fun driving her around.

The lifter in the pic was spinning because of how evenly spread the wear is. Likely cause is lifter quality.

For what it's worth, the other lifters that show the same wear, all seem to be evenly wore/concaved out.

Not enough zinc in the Rotella-T,

i read years ago that they removed a lot of zinc in that oil...

i don't know why people still run diesel oil in their cars.. there are so many oils out there designed for flat tappet cams these days..

as recommended by driven racing oil i:
broke my cam in with this, GP-1 30 Grade Break-In Specialty Motor Oil
after cam break in i changed the oil and filter with the same stuff.

after 400 miles with break in oil in it i changed the oil and filter and went with this oil. GP-1 10W-30 Synthetic Blend High Performance Oil

did a 2 week 5,000 mile road trip and all has been good so far...

.

My engine builder recommended comp cams 30w break in oil.. I ran that for 500 miles and dumped it. Since then, I have been running Valvoline VR1 20w/50 since. My engine has a comp cam flat tappet and comp lifters. 0 issues and about 15k miles on the engine now.
