What is the "perfect" street/strip package......for the average Moparian

-
If were talking N/A I am going to say from experience a stroked small block, 550 to maybe crowding 600 hp, a lightweight 904 trans with appropriate mods for the build, a good 8" converter again built for the application, double adjustable shocks, Caltracs, 4.10 gears and a 275/60/15 drag radial and you have a killer street strip package that is balanced well and is crazy fun on the street and is to be honest a perfect E.T. range to race in come the weekends.

IHMO, a 550 to 600HP isn't going to be that street friendly low maintenance out of 4" stroke SB motor.

4.10 gears with 275/60/15 isn't very freeway friendly either to drive it to the track either.

Seems like a car that CAN be driven on the street, but spends most of the time in the garage or on a trailer to the track. Cars that pop up at a local cruise in 3-4 times a year only within 10 street miles from the owners home. But you hear from owners telling you about their killer ride... that's at home.

Like most things in life, this is a subjective topic. What you may find intolerable, I may find okay. Just depends.

I'm in my early 40s, but my mind doesn't know it yet. I still love loud cars that get horrible gas mileage, because when I drive my project car it's more of an experience than for utility. I have my reliable DD for when I have to run errands. But when I want to go raise hell, get some looks, or stroke my ego - I get in my Mopar.

That being said, I love loose converters on the street. Never had a problem. I build my street/strip cars right and I plan everything out ad nauseum. I think the people that have builder's remorse are the ones that jumped into it without a plan or had unreasonable expectations.

You better lighten the HELL out of the car if you're going out for ice cream...

Leave the commie state, come to Florida, vote red and keep it beautiful. You’ll love my home owners acco. Since more than half have hot rods and a few own MoPars.
Yea…. Life is hood here!

'73 Gremlin with a 304. It ATE fox bodies and shat barbed wire all day long.
I love Gremlins. Always wanted one. We helped a high school friend put a 401 in one. That was purdy close. lol

Fair enough.

Ok. I would build a stock stroke 340. Just cause everybody else would do a stroker. Fully ported closed chamber W2 heads, fully ported LD340 TA W2 intake, mild (just under .600 lift) solid roller, zero deck height short block with Molnar rods and Callies crank, windage tray, Kevco pan with external oil pump. Sling it all in Vixen and the competition better pray. Real hard.
Let’er rip potato chip!
Only problem is that intake. Good luck fortune hunter!
Getcha a small single plane like the M1, or ether Holley single plane for the W2.

I know. I figure if I can afford all the rest I listed, I'm goin for that intake, too. lol

Nice!!! I could get down with that setup.....sounds old school cool!!!!

I think I'll be able to get into the 11's with this from what I've read on the post your 11 second combos thread.
I've got PTO, so I'll be racing on wednesday nights when there's probably only 50-100 guys at Sears Point. Saturday races suck.

My short term plans;
1991 LA360 block at machinist
0 decked, squared and mains honed, 0.030 bore for cleanup
Scat internally balanced stock stroke 360 at machinist
Forged pistons at machinst
(looks like I'll probably have to go with Trick Flows since I am doubtful that the ProMaxx cnc shockers will still be available when I will have the cash, China and their shipping issues)
(The plans for them were Comp Cams conical valve springs and tool steel retainers to reduce valve train mass, and I can't remember who does the valves, I'm gonna have to look it up again, I am thinking valves with a narrower cross section in the air stream on the intake side)
Lunati 30200740 at machinist
Hughes 5013XL lifters in my closet
Fluidampr on the idea that it will help absorb some of the shock of the impulse on each cylinder's firing. I am going for longer life of components rather than absolute MAXIMUM power. I may switch to an ATI. in my closet

I've got three intakes (rpm airgap, offy 360* low rise dual quad and eddy 180* low rise dual quad. I want to test all three of them, so when I do get this car ready for the track, I'll post up results. I suspect that I'll end up not using any of them in favor of the weiand 1995 tunnel ram.

D453 headers, 2.5" exhaust, in closet/shed
and I'll experiment with cutouts, see if that shaves any time. (at least it'll be LOUD. **** the Homeowner's Association, right in the ears with a 360 Mopar! Seriously, those guys are dicks.)

minimum tc called for is 2500 on cam spec, I will have to talk to a tc company and just get one made if they don't have an off the shelf that will do the job properly. current tc is 2400 stall, I can't remember who made it. tci?

If I were going to stay with a small block, I'd have just done a 904. I don't want to buy a driveshaft twice. I really liked @younggun2.0 's 727 build thread for his 470.
small block 727 (because long term plans call for a big block in a few years) from 727specialist.com I picked up when a guy changed direction. I think I paid $700 or so.
S60, 4.10 in the car
Yes, caltracs
QA1 front end.
Manual steering to replace power steering
no A/C
untubbed, 255 width tires are the best I can fit in the wheelwells of a 68 fastback.

I'd be surprised if I can get 550 rwhp with this combo. we'll see. at the very least, it'll stomp the **** out of my '16 charger with the 392.

replacing front clip with glass, same with rear decklid, battery in trunk, I'll have to talk to @crackedback for his battery harness, I got his headlight relay setup, PURE AWSOMENESS!

I don't know if I'll keep the inner fenders, I do want to drive the car in the winter
other **** has already been done to lighten the car. I still want to remove the window cranks, @Cope lost somewhere around 13lbs each on that if I remember right.
also, Put your big block dart on a diet

An 8 track and CB radio with the 9' whip antenna and a tennisball can just suck it. LONG AND HARD.
Oh, and a bluetooth capable radio.

Thousands of cars and a million guitars!
Screaming with power in the air.

I never made an 11 second post

I like your ideas......I run 275/60/15 on my fastback and also with an s60 that Dr Diff had narrowed 1/2" per side and then I run offset hangers and no issues in a stock wheel well.

You better lighten the HELL out of the car if you're going out for ice cream...

:poke:
I don't like most of the ways required to lighten a car.....not a huge fan of fiberglass or lexan for that matter unless it was a strictly race car, won't cut or drill holes in my car to lighten it, won't cut the inner fenders out, but do run aluminum bumper brackets, no HVAC box, aluminum hardware scattered throughout the car, etc.

Geez I don't know.....I only changed the oil and ran the valves a couple times a year more for peace of mind, I would get up on the freeway but will admit I wasn't going 75 like everybody else as I didn't like the constant 4k plus rpm's.....but lets not forget there are a lot of Drag Week guys doing that and they mostly have the valvetrain for it and take it easy on the highways unless they have an overdrive.....so it's doable and is done each and every year, I guess from so many not liking 550-600 hp maybe your driving skills have diminished and hey I get it......buy mine haven't and I enjoy that kind of power.....425hp gets boring real quick, I don't drive to the track although when I first started racing I would drive 10 miles to meet up some friends that had a trailer and they would tow me.......didn't mind the drive at all before going to the track but was always leary of deer when I was driving home at midnight or later.

I am assuming you may mean a stroked big block ? All of my small blocks are stroked and are of decent size. I can't speak from personal experience but only from what those that have had a big block in an A body have said and you will hear it stated frequently that the car becomes nose heavy and just isn't balanced as well as a small block.....again no personal experience but I could believe it.
I hear what your saying, but I won't worry about that until they start putting corners in drag strips. LOL

Where did you get the aluminum bumper brackets? I don't have a tig welder.

Tig, TIG you damn stupid autocorrect android bullshit!

My thoughts run parallel with the OP. My 408 was pretty much what he described, it ran high 6.50 at 3260#. I don’t get guys saying high powered strokers require a lot of maintenance. The 408 and my current 434 get the valves ran and an oil change in the spring, along with a thorough going over of the car. The last set of plugs in the 434 were in it for over two years and were fine when removed. I drove it to work, 35 mile round trip, it goes to the grocery, cruises, ice crème, wherever I want to drive it. I don’t want to take any long trips, I have other vehicles for that. I do wish my Dart was lighter, 3292# race ready with me in it, the exhaust is another 60#.

I had a 69 Dart with a 440, 727 and 5.13 gears. It was the most I’ll handling car I’ve ever owned. My current Dart is a much better balanced car.

Long live fast small blocks! Even the ones that think they’re big blocks. LOL

Yeah I too get puzzled when I see so many replies that say its not a good street/strip package but a 12 or 13 second car is.........HUH?????

I just posted this on the stroked 273 thread. They’re comfortable in their little box. I like to explore what’s over the wall around mine. LOL

Times have changed. When I was in high school in the late 70s if you had a 12 second car you had something. Now you can build a 10 second car that just as streetable or even more streetable than that 12 sec. Car of yesterday.

I agree Aaron.....I never once found the barracuda un-streetable in any way shape or form, kinda loud, lol, but I didn't mind it as I wasn't in it for hours at a time and most everybody else that heard it while driving around seemed to enjoy it too. Your Dart will be a really good street/strip car too once you get it finished if we could only afford or want to afford the elevated prices of everything to take it to the track at the present time. How is Rod doing?

Rod is doing fine. Been trying to get him to build his 440 for the coronet. It just needs assembled. I'll just have to show up and make him do it. I'm excited about my dart. Should be just what I want. Short block is done. Adding 2.055valves to the heads then assemble.

Very cool......tell him hi for me next time you talk to him and shoot me a text or message on here when your Dart is done and your gonna take it out somewhere as I would like to come see it
