When was the last time you saw one of these (mystery race engine purchase)

good guy parts guy! he did you a favor, even if you didn't know it at the time!

the patchouli stink never went away, now the weed is just more pronounced because it's so much more dank. lol!
He was just an asshole, that was his deal but yes you're right and once I started asking him questions he started smiling a little more lol.
Last time I had weed was about 15 years ago and I can imagine nowadays that stuff would put me into a coma

My guess is it’ll be the .509 cam. Mopar sold so many of those things they became legendary.

Only if the last owner/builder is a stupid ***. With that head flow rate on top of a 440 and that intake, it would be a turd and a half.

On the Purple 292 note…. It did what the book would say it would do and did it well. It is a pretty big HFT. Low on lift.

Yea but he coulda been a lot like the rest of us cheap asses and got a top end for a deal and threw it on his existing bottom end. The .509 came in two flavors, one on a 108 lsa and one on a 114lsa. Other than those changes the .509 was the purple 292/292 cam. It was 248 at 050. Which purple 292 are you talking about?

was that during your mini-truck phase?

*ducks*
Mini trucks? Never went through that phase. I’ve owned a LOT of cars but never a mini truck. I’d like to do a ford courier or a Chevy luv though. Or maybe a D50 with a turbo small block!

I used to run a 474 street Hemi grind in a 318. I stepped up to the 292/509 when I built the 360. Hey it was the 80's and I was racing it every weekend.

It's going to need a few rockers. The passenger side needs at least three. Driver side looks great. Pushrods look okay which surprises me

All 16 rockers have witness marks in the anodization from hitting the retainer. That alone warrants removing the heads to check the guides. Next up head bolts and valley cover. All of the rocker shaft stud nuts were backed off so there might be hope for the cylinder walls.

Nice stuff.

On the 509 cam thing. I used to tell customers, unless you plan on running engine in the last 500 RPM of the band all the time, the 484 was a better cam for 95% of street cars. Put in the 484/108 advanced a bunch and let it eat.

The fun part was the people that didn't listen, then got beat by the smaller cammed cars most of the time. Try talking someone into a J converter or similar when minimum wage was in the 3.35/hr range. A months worth of paychecks for a converter, nope. We gonna run the stock one. LOL

Yes on the BB 484 was the better cam, and the time slip showed it, dozens of times!

I had a 509 cam in my 70 r/t charger,4 speed and 4.10 Dana. Fresh rebuild and added a six pak in 1985. That was a running mother. I would love to do that build over with some compression and good heads.

Always liked the 280/474 better than the 284/484.

The lowly 272/455 ran better than it should have but it might have been the ported 516 heads with big valves that made it magic. In a 71 300 2dr with HP manifolds, performer intake,750 vacuum secondary, and 3.23 gears.

Not what?
I think it's a fairly stock engine with a box of parts, but the only way you'll know is tear it down and document the thing. Compression ratio, springs, etc etc and build quality, torque values, clearances, WTF knows.

Just remember, that EVERY used, oily, "double hump" Chovit was a "Corvette engine."

Let me add that I'm not trying to crap on your find, all I'm saying is, that until you REALLY go through it, you won't know whether it's gold, or lead, LOL

I see some cool parts that are bolted together.

When they are bolted together there's less chance of missing pieces. But it becomes a mystery box of what parts are in there and their condition.

Cheap? Speak not for me! I’ll save where I can but cheap don’t let the car eat. That’s a lot of assumption on the above paragraph. Not saying it can’t be true.

The 108

Heck yea! Lived that one big time. 2.02 J heads and a nice valve job, back cut valves, TorkerII-340, 750, 1-3/4 super comps in a 10-1 .030-360, 4spd & 4.10’s.

Who’s rockers?

small block 508/292.. it was actually damn good on the street.. MP short block, eddy heads, rpm intake, had a dynamic converter, 3.91 gear and a proform 750 DP.

I stepped up to the Edelbrock heads as well a couple years after they were introduced. Also used on the MP 360 short block. Not happy with the work done by that Alabama company. Driver side slugs were .010 positive at #1 & .015 @ #7, zero deck on the passenger side.

The combo was pretty good for what it was though. Same as above. 4spd & 4.10’s. OH! Almost forgot, I made the switch to a LD-340 with the TQ and race mods already done to it. It made a nice difference in the street and back alley’s.

keep your zumbas on grandpa, i'll get that quart of thunderbird when i see johnny snake eye to pick up the gaskets for the 850 DP. he said if there's any china white in the tri-county he'd flip you a bag.
When you come through again, we'll handle it.....and some Fincher's barbeque.

those short blocks were just under 1500 bucks. I'm sure machining wasn't perfect.
