So, I'm shopping around for a set of cheaper headers for my '71 Valiant, and was wondering if the power steering gets in the way?

i cant say it's a universal thing but i know getting my headers off the 318 was a major pain in the neck. had to remove the starter, the power steering box and part of the steering linkage. i re-read the manual and the instructions from summit and evidently this is common practice.

hope that helps somehwhat.

I can speak for the hooker comp headers. They do clear the power steering, big starter and shift linkage. They are a pain to install. Have a buddy hanging around because it takes about 4 hands and patience. They do hang low and capture the drag link on your steering, but are worth the headache. Hope this helps.

Sticking with the stock exhaust manifolds is sounding more and more appealing to me now!

thats what I thought after what it took to get my Hookers in the Dart... I had a slight clearance issue with the steering box, and had to remove the starter and take the drag link out first.... I love the headers.. but they were a pain in the ***! LOL

Dynamax headers fit in my son's '74 Duster with a little coaxing (no hammers used). Has a 360, mini starter, and power steering. The only major issue we had was a clearance problem with the steering shaft coupler. Had to do a little modification. Their price was right, too.

I put a set of Dougs on this year. I took a set off (they look like the hookers, but i'm not sure if they were) they had been hammered in to clear and the steering column would hit if you turned right. When I put the Doug's on they were hitting the drivers side torsion bar and the steering box. It ended up that my engine was not in the correct spot in the engine bay and I had to move it over to the passengers side an inch.
You might want to look into that.

Leave the header loose and hanging down. Reinstall the steering box and then bolt the header to the head. I had to do that with the manual steering box also.

sorry - just realized i had been asked a question and never responded.

Poppa - all i can say is it took me a while, lots of sweat and some cursing but i did it.
1 - loosen engine mount bolts and jack up engine as far as you can
2 - make sure headers are lined up properly and then pull them off the studs and raise them as high as you can
3 - i am short so i stood on a tire and just kept shimmying the pow steering box into place while maneuvering the headers out of the way until i got the box between the headers and the mount
4 - from there i just turned/twisted etc until i could get the top bolt into the pow steering box to keep the box in place
5 - then i went beneath car and did the other 2 bolts
6 - make sure starter is in now too!
7 - tightened everythin up, installed oil filter on left side, dropped the engine down, tightened eng mounts and header bolts and voila. lost about 10 pounds of sweat, ripped all my knuckles open and cursed like a sailor all the while, but it got done!!

an extra set of hands is a HUGE help by the way!

I put a set of Hooker hedders on a 72 dart with a 360 and they were a pain. I also had some clearance issues with the idler arm on the passenger side. My car also had power steering and we had do put a small dent in one tube for the power steering unit. They were a pain to put on but they do sound good.

70 Dart with 318 with Hooker Comp headers. Didn't have any issues with the steering box itself, just with the steering shaft coupler, and the idler arm rubbing.

I used the cheap summit´s own brand headers in my ´69 dart 340, power steering, ministarter. Passenger side was an easy fit, drivers side made some trouble on the steering box, pitman arm and the coupler. I´m sure they are an easy fit with manual box.
Greetings

And, the column shift linkage, anyone?

i ran both headman and hooker compition headers on my dart with power steering and column shift. i think the headmans fit a little better in my car. they both hang low and are a pain to get to a few plugs but they are cheap and work. i have tti's now and will spend the extra in the future for tti's because the fit is so nice.

I have Headmans, they are a pain like all headers are, but no power steering issues and no banging.

Has anyone used the block hugger shorty headers on a power steering car with column linkage?
